Minimize the amount of devices and data you travel with as the risk for cyber compromise increases during travel.


laptop safety tips: before you go

Take proactive steps to secure your devices and your personally identifiable information (such as your name, address, date of birth and Social Security Number) before you travel. Be sure to:

  • Back up your electronic files onto your OneDrive
  • Do not back up your files onto a USB
  • Remove sensitive data
  • Make sure the operating system software and Chevron-approved apps are updated
  • Get into the habit of locking your device when you’re not using it
  • Review recent CIC cyber threat advisories or OE moments
  • If you are taking an international trip from the United States with a company-owned device, ensure to request international wireless service via the Tangoe Mobile "Travel Request" activity.

laptop safety tips: while traveling

Be vigilant about your surroundings and where and how you use your devices. Make sure to:

  • Always carry your laptop or tablet with you and never check it into your luggage
  • Keep your devices secure in public places such as airports, hotels, and restaurants
  • Ensure that you are connecting to a Chevron VPN
  • If you need to use public Wi-Fi, use a Chevron VPN instead of single sign-on (SSO)
  • Take care that nobody is trying to steal information from you by spying on your device screen while it's in use
  • Consider using a privacy screen on your laptop to restrict visibility
  • Disable automatic remote internet connectivity and Bluetooth
  • Minimize location sharing while traveling as to not alert criminals when you may be away from your home, hotel, or office

cellphone/tablet use while traveling

Take the time to prepare your mobile device for international travel before you leave the country. Make sure to:

  • Review Global Mobility Services guidelines for traveling internationally with a company-owned mobile device (for U.S. employees)
  • If you are taking an international trip from the United States with a company-owned device, ensure to request international wireless service via the Tangoe Mobile "Travel Request" activity.
  • Non U.S. travelers will need to check with their local business unit or phone provider
  • Always carry your mobile device with you and never check it into your luggage
  • When possible, use Chevron Wi-Fi services to receive/send emails
  • Disable Geotagging or GPS tracking on your mobile device if you are concerned about being tracked
  • Delete suspicious text messages immediately
  • Do not click on suspicious emails on your mobile device
  • Either delete suspicious emails immediately or when you are on your GIL computer, use the Report Phishing and Spam button in Outlook
  • Verify a caller’s identity before sharing any information
  • Lock mobile devices in hotel safes and office cabinets when not in use
  • Familiarize yourself with InfoRisk’s Mobile Communication Risks Sharepoint
  • Ensure you have not downloaded any prohibited applications on a company-provided cell phone

If you think you have been a victim of a cyber breach, you should report the incident immediately through the Global Service Desk.
