security risks
Houthi attacks against Saudi military bases and critical infrastructure mostly ended in 2023 but could resume if Saudi-Houthi peace talks collapse, Yemen’s civil war intensifies, or the US escalates airstrikes against the Houthis. The threat from domestic Middle East terrorist groups, including Islamic State (IS) and Shia’a militants in al-Qatif Governorate, has decreased but not fully dissipated.
Criminal activity is low compared to most U.S. metropolitan areas. Saudi Arabia’s road accident fatality rate remains high, despite improvements following the 2009 introduction of the Saher traffic control system.
