security risks
Terrorism, crime, kidnapping, violent protests, and political instability all present acute risks for travelers to Pakistan. The Pakistani Taliban, elements of al Qaeda, and other extremist groups routinely carry out terrorist attacks throughout the country, usually against government and security targets, but also against softer targets such as business hotels, markets, and places were elites and foreigners congregate.
Crime and kidnapping are particular risks in Karachi, though all cities present significant threats. Political violence is a regular occurrence. Religious protests are common throughout the country—especially on Fridays after midday prayers—and have the potential to turn violent.
Anti-American demonstrations are common, and any installation perceived to be associated with the U.S. is a potential target of popular anger or attack. The U.S. embassy and other foreign embassies are periodically closed due to terrorism threats.
