security risks
Jordan is at high risk for political and socioeconomic unrest, which may become violent. Pro-Palestinian demonstrations recur in proximity to the Israeli embassy in Amman, Palestinian refugee camps, and the Israel-Jordan border area. Price increases and subsidy cuts may also trigger occasional demonstrations which may turn violent, particularly in Ma’an Governorate.
Jordan-based lone wolf attackers have attempted to infiltrate the West Bank, fired on Israeli territory, targeted Israeli nationals at the Allenby Bridge border crossing, and sabotaged energy infrastructure associated with Israeli gas imports. Jordanian security services periodically announce the disruption of Islamic State – inspired plots, including bombings and kidnappings.
Narcotics and arms smuggling from Syria and Lebanon-based, Iran-aligned militant and criminal networks have become a major concern and further raised political violence risks. Petty theft sometimes occurs in tourist areas and Amman’s Old City.
