security risks
Egypt is at high risk for socioeconomic unrest which may become violent. Discrete triggers for unrest may include subsidy cuts, price increases, rationing, police abuses, and/or home demolitions.
The Egyptian government has mostly contained Middle East terrorist activity. However, lone wolf terrorists have attacked Israeli nationals and Israel-linked locations. Islamic State retains a foothold in areas of northern Sinai where it occasionally strikes security personnel and critical infrastructure.
Kidnapping risk is high in northern Sinai and in some rural areas but low elsewhere in the country. Petty crime can occur in some tourist areas.
