security risks
Bahrain faces a persistent terrorist threat from the Islamic State (IS), al-Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula (AQAP) and Shia militant groups. Neither IS nor AQAP has claimed a successful attack in the country, but Shia militants carry out periodic bombings. These typically target police forces and government sites but sometimes carry risks to civilians.
In addition to terrorism, Bahrain continues to experience regular demonstrations, serious political tensions and occasional protester and police violence. However, foreigners and foreign interests typically are not targeted by protesters. The intensity of protest activity and the government’s crackdown often increases around prominent events/holidays and judicial cases involving the sentencing of opposition figures.
