security risks
There is an ongoing threat of terrorism, including in Istanbul and Ankara. The U.S. State Department advises that Islamist extremists are intent on attacking U.S. citizens, and locations where westerners are likely to frequent, in Istanbul and other major cities including Ankara and Gaziantep. The State Department is especially concerned about an attack against U.S. interests in Istanbul.
Islamic State (IS) fighters are present in Turkiye and have conducted attacks in Istanbul in the past. IS has also conducted attacks in Ankara and southeast Turkiye and could conduct further attacks, including in tourist areas or tourist resorts such as Antalya.
Extremists have also threatened to kidnap or assassinate westerners in Turkiye.
The Kurdistan Worker's Party (PKK), a terrorist organization fighting for increased autonomy for Turkiye's Kurds, ended its ceasefire in June 2015. The Turkish government in October 2019 initiated a military attack against Kurdish forces related to the PKK in Syria, creating further disturbances along the Syrian border. While the PKK primarily targets the government and security forces, recent attacks have been aimed at, or caused casualties among, civilians in Ankara and Istanbul.
