Rates of street crimes (pickpocketing, purse snatchings, and other crimes of opportunity) continue to be relatively high. These crimes occur mainly within the popular tourist areas and on public transportation (both rail and bus). Many of the incidents involve multiple perpetrators using various efforts to distract their victims.

Demonstrations—mainly concerning financial difficulties and subsequent austerity measures—have taken place regularly in central Athens over the past several years.

Visitors to Greece should exercise high levels of caution and situational awareness and take the following precautions:

Exercise caution when using public transportation or passing through transit hubs
Avoid, where possible, crowded locations and tourist sites
Avoid political demonstrations and other gatherings, particularly around the Omonia and Syntagma areas of Athens
Monitor media and local information sources
Minimize your profile by not displaying Chevron-related logos on your belongings
Be prepared for additional security measures and potential travel disruptions
