security risks
The security environment has remained mostly calm since a period of military rule following a coup and the return to some form of civilian-led government after general elections, but the potential for instability or isolated protests to reemerge in Bangkok and other provincial centers remains. Terrorism is also a concern.
Southern Thailand’s volatile security environment places it at a higher level of alert (yellow) than the rest of Thailand (green). A long-running separatist insurgency that is particularly active in the country’s three southernmost provinces of Yala, Pattani, and Narathiwat has resulted in almost daily extremist violence.
Despite local security checkpoints throughout Hat Yai and Songkhla municipalities, attacks continue.
