security risks
Travelers should be aware of risks associated with terrorism and political violence in Sri Lanka. The U.S. Department of State has assessed Colombo as being a high threat location for terrorism directed at U.S. government interests, and terrorist groups carried out major attacks in 2019 in Colombo and Batticaloa. Political protests, particularly in Colombo and near government facilities, may disrupt local mobility and have the potential to be violent. The Northern and Eastern provinces entail greater risk because of unresolved grievances and unexploded ordnance associated with the country’s decades-long civil war.
