security risks
Travelers should be aware of risks associated with the civil unrest and armed conflict in Myanmar since the coup in February 2021. Protests and demonstrations against military rule occur but are less frequent in major cities such as Yangon and Nay Pyi Taw. The military often respond to these protests with arbitrary arrests and use of deadly force. The U.S. Department of State has highlighted a risk of wrongful detention of US nationals by the military regime. The U.S government also has limited ability to provide emergency services in Myanmar as U.S government employees must obtain special authorization to travel outside of Yangon.
Civil unrest and armed conflict occur throughout Myanmar and the level of civil unrest and armed conflict varies significantly between and within states and regions and may change at any time. Fighting between the Burmese military and various ethnic groups and militia occur in parts of Chin, Kachin, Kayin, Rakhine, and Shan states, as well as in Sagaing, Mandalay, and Magway regions.
