Crime, including vehicle break-ins and other forms of petty street crime, are common in major U.S. cities. Although multiple cities saw sharp increases in rates of violent crime and gun violence in mid-2020, incidence has generally been confined to inner-city neighborhoods and is not a pressing concern for travelers adhering to sensible safety precautions.

Violent extremists pose an ongoing risk for terrorist attack inside the United States. The threat primarily stems from lone actors and small groups, capable of undertaking unsophisticated attacks.

Visitors to the United States of America should exercise caution and situational awareness and take the following precautions:

Monitor media and local information sources
Avoid displaying valuables, including cash, electronics, and jewelry
Be vigilant in tourist areas where pick pocketers and petty theft can be common
Never leave possessions unattended (even momentarily) in public places including restaurants
