security risks
Opportunistic street crime – including pickpocketing, bag snatching and armed robbery – is the primary security concern for travelers to Colombia. Most criminals are armed, and victims of crime should not resist to avoid injury.
Organized criminal groups are involved in drug trafficking, extortion-related attacks, contraband smuggling, and illegal mining operations throughout the country; however, these activities are unlikely to affect travelers engaging in legitimate business activities.
Colombia’s peace agreements with the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC) and United Self-Defense Forces of Colombia (AUC) have reduced – but not eliminated – the threat of domestic, politically motivated terror attacks and kidnap-for-ransom schemes. Dissident FARC elements, and members of the National Liberation Front (ELN) and other small insurgencies remain operational and continue to conduct small-scale attacks against the government and illicit activities to finance their operations.
Strikes and anti-government protests over various socio-economic issues take place regularly in Colombia. Most demonstrations are peaceful and may cause localized traffic disruption, but there is potential for such events to turn violent, including through acts of vandalism and clashes with the security forces.
