security risks
Public protests, demonstrations, and strikes take place occasionally and often lead to violent confrontations between participants and security forces. Large-scale, and at times violent, protests could occur based on political developments. Although no large-scale protests have occurred in over a year, between 2017-2018, numerous large-scale protests numbering more than 100,000 people occurred against the president’s plan to run again.
Crime poses a substantial risk to travelers and the U.S. Government warns of high levels of both violent and petty crime. Criminals monitor ATM machines and rob those who use them.
There are reports of criminals using improvised roadblocks to halt traffic and conduct robberies. Muggings frequently occur on beaches in Lomé and acts of piracy have occurred in Togolese waters.
