security risks
Crime poses the leading risk to travelers to Tanzania. Street crime—including pick-pocketing, purse-snatching and mugging—is common, including on local beaches. Express kidnappings-for-ransom have targeted foreigners in Dar Es Salaam. The island of Zanzibar, a tourist destination, has seen armed robberies of foreigners and an attack on a beachfront bar. Areas near Tanzania’s borders with Rwanda and Burundi are vulnerable to banditry.
The U.S. Embassy in Tanzania was the target of a 1998 al-Qaeda attack, and there is an ongoing risk of further terrorist activity. In September 2021, an individual opened fire in Dar es Salaam’s diplomatic quarter, killing four people. Authorities identified the incident as a terrorist attack.
Islamic State-aligned terrorists operating from the Cabo Delgado region of Mozambique have launched several small attacks in Tanzania’s border regions over the last few years. The group has recruited heavily in Tanzania and may receive financing from individuals based in Tanzania. Tensions between local Christian and Muslim communities sometimes run high.
Protests and demonstrations occur frequently and can turn violent.
