security risks
Crime remains the primary concern for travelers to Kenya. Violent crime, including carjackings and kidnappings-for-ransom, occur frequently. Criminals often operate in groups and use weapons. In most instances, criminals release cooperative victims unharmed. However, criminals will not hesitate to use violence against non-cooperative victims. Foreigners are regularly targeted by groups of armed men in street crime, particularly in Nairobi and other large cities.
Terrorism remains a major concern throughout the country and the U.S. government reports that it continues to receive information about terrorist plotting against U.S. and other Western interests in Nairobi, the coastal cities and border areas with Somalia. Al-Shabaab—a Somalia-based, al-Qaeda-linked Islamic extremist group—represents a significant, credible and persistent threat to public security in Kenya, where it has carried out a string of attacks intended as retaliation for Kenyan military operations in Somalia. Most al-Shabaab actions in Kenya take the form of small-scale bombings and grenade attacks, especially in Kenya's coastal regions. Future attacks by the group against prominent Kenyan and Western targets remain possible.
Large protests broke out in Kenya in 2024 as part of widespread anger over new taxes and a rising cost of living. Protesters stormed parliament and burned part of it down, forcing the president to backtrack on a proposed tax hike.
