security risks
Ghana is generally stable politically, but political rallies and demonstrations can turn violent with little warning. Protests could occur around the 7 December elections, but widespread violence is unlikely. Protesters are demanding better economic conditions and lower prices.
Visitors should also be aware of the risks of both petty and violent crime. Pick-pocketing and purse-snatching are common, and armed robberies sometimes take place in residential and shopping areas. Recent statistics indicate the rate of violent crimes is increasing in the capital, Accra. There have been isolated incidents of passengers in taxis being attacked and robbed, especially at night.
The Ghanaian government participates in international military efforts to stabilize Mali and could be vulnerable to terrorist activity as a result. Al-Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb has threatened to retaliate against countries contributing to the stabilization effort in Mali and has claimed responsibility for attacks in Burkina Faso and Cote d’Ivoire.
