security risks
Northern Cameroon, particularly areas close to the Nigerian border, is subject to frequent attacks by the Boko Haram militant/terrorist group, which has allied itself with the Islamic State.
Eastern Cameroon has experienced instability—including increased crime and incidents of kidnapping—as a result of civil violence in the Central African Republic.
The Northwest and Southwest regions of Cameroon are also experiencing instability due to an insurgency and the resulting Cameroonian military operations. The exact culprits remain unclear, but government officials have blamed various actors, including Anglophone rebels and political opposition.
More broadly, crime—including violent crime—is a risk for visitors, particularly in Yaoundé. Criminals target expatriates due to their perceived wealth. The U.S. Department of State notes that expatriates are often targeted for violent crime in many parts of the city, including outside their residences.
